Extra time ecstasy for the Watt

Twice in four days, Heriot-Watt has clinched a victory in extra time to march on to the next round of a big cup competition.  On Wednesday, the Watt’s Men’s BUCS side shrugged off the disappointments of their Scottish Conference season to beat the University of Liverpool of the Northern Conference Divison 1A by two goals to one on their own ground in the BUCS Trophy competition.  A deflected Scott Dargo shot had set up the opportunity and after the scores were tied 1 – 1 after ninety minutes, a Bruce Hay header from a Scott Davies cross took the Watt lads into the last sixteen of the competition.  It was a great day for Scottish universities, as Abertay Dundee and Edinburgh Napier also eliminated Northern Conference 1A opponents, respectively the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester.

Then, yesterday, Watt’s East of Scotland team defeated high-flying Premier Division side Civil Service Strollers 1 – 0 with Cammy Stevenson‘s precision shot in the second half of extra time at Muirhouse.  For a report on this match, see the ‘East of Scotland League’ tab.

After two two-hour marathons within a few days, the stamina of the student players will be tested when they meet Edinburgh Napier University in the next round of the BUCS Trophy at Riccarton on Monday evening (kick-off 7.15).  Scott Dargo is doubtful for this game after sustaining an injury in yesterday’s victory, so there may be an opportunity for another young player to state his case for a place in the First Team.
