Watt Women ready to make promotion push in BUCS

Last season, the Heriot-Watt Women’s First Team suffered from a lack of players, which blunted what might otherwise have been a promotion challenge in Division 3A of the BUCS Scottish Conference. Happily, most of the players who showed promise last season have returned to form the core of this year’s squad – and as with the Men’s side of the Club, there has been an influx of new talent this year which has enabled the team to get off to a flyer in the League.

Yesterday, a totally dominant performance brought an opening-day victory by a score of 11 – 0 against City of Glasgow College First, sweeping the Watt side to the top of the Division, above yesterday’s other winners, University of Edinburgh Third, who beat Queen Margaret University First 5 – 0. As that score suggests, the Edinburgh side cannot be taken lightly; although it is the third team of its institution, it’s a big university and the First and Second teams both occupy high positions in Division 1A.

Next up for the Women’s First is another home game, against St Andrews First in a fortnight’s time, before an interesting Conference Cup tie against Division 2A side Edinburgh Napier University First the following week.

Two Men’s sides played yesterday, both in the Conference Plate: the Thirds had a rather unconvincing 2 – 0 win away to St Andrews Sixth, the bottom team in Division 6C, which hasn’t won a game in living memory; and the Fifths lost by only 5 – 3 against Queen Margaret University First.
