Weird, wild and wonderful weekend awaits…

This will be a weekend out of the ordinary for Heriot-Watt and several other clubs in the East of Scotland League. Saturday is the day of the Groundhoppers. GroundhopUK‘s Scottish Hop will visit the League, taking in six games between Friday evening and Sunday morning. The Watt is fourth on the list: the third game on the Saturday, after Burntisland Shipyard versus Preston Athletic and Kelty Hearts versus Tweedmouth Rangers; and before the Saughton derby between Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale and Tynecastle. Watt’s opponents will be Leith Athletic, notoriously Watt’s biggest bogey team, against which Heriot-Watt has failed to record a win in the last nineteen attempts. The match will be even more special because of its venue – by permission of the East of Scotland League’s Board, it will be played at the Oriam Indoor Arena with a 5 o’clock kick-off. For the occasion, the Bistro Kitchen will be open throughout the game and will serve a special menu featuring Chilli and Rice and a vegetarian option.

Before that enticing prospect, on Friday evening the Under-20s take another step in what they hope will be a title-winning journey. Last week’s 4 – 3 win over Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale was a narrow squeak, but an important victory against a greatly-improved opponent. This week, the Watt has a home tie against another local side, Tynecastle. Tynie hasn’t had the greatest of seasons in the Development League, but those who attended the reverse fixture earlier in the season will know how well the Watt had to play to gain the points on that occasion and won’t underestimate a determined and capable opponent.

As well as the First Team game against Leith on Saturday, the Reserves will be in action at Riccarton, taking on Blackridge Vale of Craig in a Victory Cup First Round tie. Last Saturday, the Watt went down 9 – 3 away to league-leaders Murieston United. Curiously enough, that’s a reasonably satisfactory result. We won’t come up against a side with United’s firepower every week and to score three against a team of that standard is encouraging.
