Watt gear up for new season

Hope all our supporters are enjoying the typical Scottish summer weather we’re having.  The players aren’t, of course – they’re having to prepare for the new season in this heat.  Pre-season training is in full swing and the first match of the pre-season took place on Saturday, with a Watt selection winning 6 – 0 against Michelin FC of Ballymena, Northern Ireland.  The visitors were restricted to a pool of thirteen players by late call-offs, so their options were a bit limited, but it’s good to see the Watt lads get off to such a confident start.  Many thanks to Michelin for making the trip – we hope everyone enjoyed their visit to Edinburgh.

There will be changes to the Watt line-up for the new season, with some exciting additions to both the playing resources and the coaching staff.  Gavin Malin, a Watt graduate who had Scottish League experience with Arbroath and Forfar Athletic comes in under both headings with a player-coach role; and another shrewd piece of recruitment on the coaching side brings the well-regarded Craig Nisbet into the Watt fold.  ‘Nizzy’ has the experience and know-how to give invaluable assistance to our young players.

Returning to Riccarton as players are former Watt stars Ewan Watson and Chrissy Rae.  In his student days, Ewan was a member of the Watt squad which won the Queen’s Park Shield four times in succession and he has brings experience and technique to the Watt front line.   Chrissy is a versatile player who was selected for the Scottish Universities squad in his time as a Watt student.

Another vital piece of news is that Aidan Quinn has agreed to continue for the new season as Club Captain, holding the position jointly with long-time Club servant Ryan Higgins.  Cammy Burt has been appointed as the new Under-20s captain as the young Watt lads prepare to defend their Development League title.

Last for now, but by no means least, is that FIRST TASK RECRUITMENT has been announced as the First Team Main Sponsor.  Many thanks to First Task, whose Director Mark Lukowiecki is a former Watt midfielder.

Next up for the Watt lads is a trip to Stirling tomorrow evening (Tuesday 10th) to face Stirling Albion Under-20.  The game arranged for Saturday against West Calder United has now been called off, so the next pre-season match will be the following Tuesday (17th), when it’s back to Stirling to face Lowland League side University of Stirling.
