Blackburn return match is another close one

The Watt’s eagerly-anticipated return game with Blackburn United, following the frantic 4 – 3  match at the Dem-Master Stadium in late November, was another tense affair, this time ending in a 1 – 1 draw.  An early lapse in the home defence gave Darren Downie the opportunity to give Blackburn the lead, but Aidan Quinn‘s twice-taken late penalty restored parity.

There will be no East of Scotland fixture for Heriot-Watt this Saturday, with all of the other twelve teams in Conference C otherwise occupied – ten in League games (albeit one of these has already been postponed) and the other two in cup ties.  Watt’s King Cup opponent, Burntisland Shipyard, is also scheduled to play a League fixture.  The next match will therefore be on the following Saturday (9th February), away to Ormiston.

The Reserves had a setback on Saturday, going down 2 – 1 away to Queensferry Athletic.  This Saturday’s game will be another test, away to Bank of Scotland Strollers in Lothian West Division.  There is an early 1 o’clock kick-off in this one, which will be played at Broughton High School 3G.

Having received a bye in the First Round of the Challenge Cup, the Under-20 side was inactive on Friday evening, but this Friday will have a welcome third meeting of the season with Kelty Hearts, this time at Riccarton in the First Round of the Knock-out Cup.  Although it was back in early October, memories of the 2 – 1 defeat in the last match against Kelty are still fresh – all the goals came in the last ten minutes after a match of few chances – and the Watt players will relish another opportunity to do battle with the League leaders.

Before then, of course, we have tomorrow’s BUCS games, as mentioned at the end of the previous post.  The Men’s Firsts kick off at 1 o’clock at Airthrey Campus against University of Stirling Second; the Men’s Seconds start at 1.15 against University of Aberdeen Second at the John Brydson Arena; the Men’s Sixths follow that match at 3.15 against Edinburgh Napier University Third; the Women’s Firsts kick-off at 3 o’clock against Edinburgh Napier University First at Ainslie Park; and the Men’s Thirds start at 5 o’clock against University of Edinburgh Fifth at Peffermill.
