Heriot-Watt University Football Club

Welcome to the website of Heriot-Watt University Football Club.

Heriot-Watt is a campus university situated on the western outskirts of Edinburgh.

Heriot-Watt University Football Club ('the Watt') enters four teams into the Scottish inter-university competition (BUCS Scottish Conference), played on Wednesdays during the academic year. In the 2007 - 2008 competition, the Heriot-Watt First Team won an incredible fifth consecutive Scottish (Men's 1A Division) championship. The Queen's Park Shield, the magnificent trophy presented for the Scottish Universities' championship, is displayed in a case mounted on the wall to the left of the entrance to the Sports Academy at Riccarton campus.

The Academy, developed in partnership with Scottish Premier League side Heart of Midlothian, is a tremendous asset for the University and has provided a great enhancement to its sports facilities, particularly those for football, and of course the Football Club has benefited substantially from this development. Before its construction, the Watt's training facilities were rudimentary, but now they stand comparison with those of almost all professional clubs in Scotland and would be the envy of most. The campus has four excellent pitches, amongst which the show pitch, on which the University's First Team plays its fixtures, has one of the best surfaces in the country and is a popular choice for Cup Finals and representative games. The ground is an excellent one for viewing. As well as being enclosed, the playing surface is surrounded by a permanent rail and a quality paved standing area.

The Football Club is also a member of the East of Scotland Football Association and the first team plays in the East of Scotland League. The East of Scotland is a senior league and is one of the main 'feeder' leagues for any vacancies which arise within the Scottish Football League. The club also operates an Under-21 side which competes in the Under-21 division of the South East Youth Football League and a Reserve team which plays in the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur League. Matches in all these leagues are played on Saturdays throughout the season, with some midweek games as necessary towards the end of the season.

Last season, Heriot-Watt University won promotion to the Premier Division of the East of Scotland League for the second time. In a two-year spell in the top division between 2005 and 2007, the Watt had a rollercoaster ride, finishing second in the Premier Division table and winning the League Cup; then suffering relegation the following year. However, the Club has immediately secured a return to the top flight by winning the First Division championship.

There are four cup competitions contested in the East of Scotland each season: the League Cup and three cups organised by the Association: the Alex Jack Cup, the Image Printers' Qualifying Cup and the King Cup. Since the discontinuation of the Scottish Qualifying Cup two years ago when the Scottish Cup was restructured to admit to the First Round all non-Scottish League clubs in full membership of the Association (which unfortunately excludes the Watt, which is an Associate Member club), there is now also a cup involving all non-League teams in the south of Scotland. This means the members of the two senior leagues: the East of Scotland League and the South of Scotland League; plus a few clubs which have full S.F.A. membership but compete in other leagues.
