Heriot-Watt University Football Club

Welcome to the website of Heriot-Watt University Football Club.

Heriot-Watt is a campus university situated on the western outskirts of Edinburgh. The Football Club is a member of the East of Scotland Football Association and the first team plays in the East of Scotland League (see 'East of Scotland League' menu tab). The East of Scotland is a semi-professional senior league and is one of the main 'feeder' leagues for any vacancies which arise within the Scottish Football League. The club also operates an Under-21 side and has two teams in amateur football.

In season 2004 - 2005, the Watt won promotion to the Premier Division of the East of Scotland League for the first time. Although, like most newly-promoted sides, the Watt was considered by many to be a favourite for immediate relegation, the team performed magnificently to finish second in the league, missing out on the championship itself by a mere two points. The Watt side claimed many notable 'scalps' on the way: victories were achieved over such prestigious clubs as Annan Athletic, The Spartans, Whitehill Welfare, Lothian Thistle and Preston Athletic. After the departure on graduation of most of the players who had achived so much, season 2006 - 2007 was a struggle for the club and it ended in relegation by a single point, but having sampled the top flight, the Watt will be keen to return and hope to be amongst the contenders for promotion again soon.

There are four cup competitions contested in the East of Scotland each season: the League Cup, the first round of which is played in sections at the start of the season; and three cups organised by the Association (the Alex Jack Cup, the Image Printers' Qualifying Cup and the King Cup). In addition to its superb league performance, the Watt side landed its first-ever piece of silverware during the 2005 - 2006 season by winning the East of Scotland League Cup - the only cup competition in which all twenty-three League clubs participate.

Matches are played on Saturdays throughout the season, with some midweek games as necessary in the latter part of the season. The Club's second and third teams play in the Lothian & Edinburgh Amateurs and the Under-21 team competes in the Scottish Youth Football Association's Eastern Region Under-21 League.

The Club also enters four teams into the Scottish inter-university competition (BUSA Scottish Conference), played on Wednesdays during the academic year (see 'Inter-University Competitions' menu tab). In the 2006 - 2007 competition, the Heriot-Watt First Team won a remarkable fourth consecutive Scottish (BUSA Men's 1A) championship. The Queen's Park Shield, the magnificent trophy presented for the Scottish Universities' championship, is displayed in a case mounted on the wall to the left of the entrance to the Sports Academy at Riccarton campus.

The Academy, developed in partnership with Scottish Premier League side Heart of Midlothian, is a tremendous asset for the University and has provided a great enhancement to its sports facilities, particularly those for football, and of course the Football Club has benefited substantially from this development. Before its construction, the Watt's training facilities were rudimentary, but now they stand comparison with those of most professional clubs in Scotland. The campus has four excellent pitches, amongst which the show pitch, on which the University's First Team plays its fixtures, has one of the best surfaces in the country and is a popular choice for Cup Finals. The ground is an excellent one for viewing. As well as being enclosed, the playing surface is surrounded by a permanent rail and a quality paved standing area.
